Sharing precious water has been a foundation of life in Jabal Akhdar for thousands of years. The Aflaj — a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Oman — is a gravity-fed combination of underground tunnels, lined canals and crystal pools so well designed it has functioned continuously for more than 2,500 years.

Ancient Waterways

Jabal Akhdar’s aflaj system is an incredible network of canals, pools and irrigation systems which runs completely on gravity. It has been developed over the eons – some parts are 5,000 years old – to equitably divide this most precious resource. It has earned international World Heritage status and is an excellent way to learn about about architecture, agriculture and local ways of life.

Outdoor Explorations

Jabal Akhdar is one of the most famous peaks in Oman's Al Hajar mountain range. For those inclined towards outdoor excursions and adventures, there is no shortage of destinations and inspiration. Hiking, camping, rock-climbing and more follow beautiful natural routes around the mountain to sites rich with ancient culture, fascinating history and brilliant views.

Culture Through Coffee

Traditional Omani coffee pots are a staple of daily life, and the drink is offered for an array of occasions. It is generally paired with small plates and sometimes even sprinkled with rosewater, as a beautiful local flourish. The intricate and idiosyncratic pots are generally made in the region, as they have been for centuries – making coffee in Oman a historic and hospitable experience not to be missed.

Culture is king in Nizwa, the local crossroads capital located at the foot of our mountain. Artistic craftsmanship and metalwork in particular are time-honoured traditions there, and studios and artisans create beautiful objects with incredible stories and deep-rooted soul; from earthenware pots to khanjar daggers and exquisite silver jewellery.

Family Walks

Discover inspiration on an array of trails cut for legs of different lengths. The nearby ‘Coral Garden’ is a great place to hunt for marine fossils, while our ancient mountain villages offer opportunities to learn about traditional ways of life.
