Ancient Waterways

Jabal Akhdar’s aflaj system is an incredible network of canals, pools and irrigation systems which runs completely on gravity. It has been developed over the eons – some parts are 5,000 years old – to equitably divide this most precious resource. It has earned international World Heritage status and is an excellent way to learn about about architecture, agriculture and local ways of life.

Jabal Akhdar is one of the most famous peaks in Oman's Al Hajar mountain range. For those inclined towards outdoor excursions and adventures, there is no shortage of destinations and inspiration. Culture is king in Nizwa, the local crossroads capital located at the foot of our mountain. Artistic craftsmanship and metalwork in particular are time-honoured traditions there, and studios and artisans create beautiful objects with incredible stories and deep-rooted soul; from earthenware pots to khanjar daggers and exquisite silver jewellery.

Discover inspiration on an array of trails cut for legs of different lengths. The nearby ‘Coral Garden’ is a great place to hunt for marine fossils, while our ancient mountain villages offer opportunities to learn about traditional ways of life.
