Half Day
Nizwa
Active
Nizwa’s craft history is easily 1,000 years old and was born of its crossroads location. Traditionally, villagers from the mountains would gather in the city to sell the wares they made in local cottage industries.
The capital’s souqs thus overflowed with baskets and mats made from palm fronds, woven rugs and wool blankets, pottery and leather wares. Nizwa soon became even more famous for its metal artisans – especially those working in copper and silver.
The tradition continues today. A visit to any home uncovers beautiful crafts – teapots, dishes, utensils and blankets – used every day. And a trip into the streets of Nizwa quickly becomes a showcase of staggering terracotta, tailored garments, the world’s finest rugs, brilliant jewellery and metalwork which remains a point of pride.
Embedded in that artistry is an incredible local spirit and cultural customs which reach back aeons. Exploring Omani crafts is educational as it is rewarding and even a short excursion uncovers everything from rue Omani souvenirs and true keepsakes to rare art.
